We talked about what happens when Caribbean professionals enter corporate spaces carrying cultural values like discipline, excellence, and focus; then realize those same values are being interpreted differently. What you see as being \u201cserious about your work,\u201d others may read as distant. What you understand as respect for structure, others may interpret as rigidity. And in that gap between intention and perception, many of us begin to question ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, this wasn\u2019t theoretical. It was lived. My early career experiences, the misunderstandings, the lack of mentorship are all part of what led me to start Carry On Friends in the first place. At the time, I didn\u2019t have the language of \u201ccultural identity at work,\u201d but I knew something wasn\u2019t adding up. My lessons and insights from my lived experience and from the 12+ years of Carry On Friends is what led to me developing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carryonfriends.com\/lens-5-of-the-caribbean-diaspora-experience-model-cdem-culture-influences-how-we-show-up-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Lens 5 of the Caribbean Diaspora Experience Model (CDEM) \u2013 Culture Influences How We Show Up at Work\">Lens 5<\/a> <\/strong>of the<strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carryonfriends.com\/caribbean-diaspora-experience-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Caribbean Diaspora Experience Model<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> <strong>(CDEM): Culture Influences How We Show Up at Work<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Kerriann brings language and structure to what many of us have experienced: the idea that professional well-being isn\u2019t just about benefits or policies \u2014 it\u2019s about whether you can exist in your full identity in the workplace without constantly negotiating who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carryonfriends.com\/lens-5-of-the-caribbean-diaspora-experience-model-cdem-culture-influences-how-we-show-up-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Lens 5 of the Caribbean Diaspora Experience Model (CDEM) \u2013 Culture Influences How We Show Up at Work\">Lens 5 <\/a>becomes real. It\u2019s not just about career paths or industries. It\u2019s about how culture shapes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>how we communicate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how we lead<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how we interpret respect and authority<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how we define excellence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And importantly, how others interpret all of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This conversation is Part 1 of a two-part discussion, where we name the experience \u2014 the tension, the misunderstandings, the cultural dissonance.
