It\u2019s personal, it\u2019s powerful, and it\u2019s rooted in all the conversations we\u2019ve had together over the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Introducing the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carryonfriends.com\/caribbean-diaspora-experience-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Caribbean Diaspora Experience Model\">Caribbean Diaspora Experience Model\u2122 (CDEM)<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a new way to understand how our Caribbean identity forms, evolves, and expresses itself in the diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stay-connected\">Why This Model Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve ever asked yourself,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><em>\u201cAm I Caribbean (or insert Caribbean country name) enough?\u201d<\/em><br><em>\u201cWhy do I experience my culture so differently from my siblings or parents?\u201d<\/em><br><em>\u201cHow do I preserve my cultural identity while navigating life in the U.S., Canada, or the U.K.?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re not alone. These are questions that have come up again and again on the podcast, in our newsletter, and in real-life conversations with friends and family. And I realized\u2014we needed a guide to help make sense of these experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<strong>Caribbean Diaspora Experience Model (CDEM)<\/strong>&nbsp;isn\u2019t an academic theory. It\u2019s a reflection of&nbsp;<strong>real-life stories<\/strong>\u2014mine, my family\u2019s, and yours. It\u2019s grounded in observation, personal growth, and years of conversations in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stay-connected\">The Six Lenses of CDEM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this first episode introducing the model, I walk through all six components using my own story to illustrate how identity shifts over time. Here&#8217;s a preview:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Where You Start Shapes the Journey<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Whether you migrated as an adult or were born in the diaspora, your connection to Caribbean culture starts somewhere. That starting point matters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Where You Live + What You Seek = How You Connect<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Living in Brooklyn versus Milwaukee isn\u2019t just geography\u2014it\u2019s a different experience of Caribbean culture. Where you live + your intention shapes your connection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural Anchors Keep Us Rooted<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Food, music, language, celebrations, spirituality, and family\u2014these are the touch points that carry memory and transmit knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your Identity Will Shift\u2014That\u2019s the Point<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 As we age, our relationship with culture evolves. It\u2019s not loss\u2014it\u2019s recalibration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural Identity Influences How We Show Up at Work<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Our work ethic, ambition, and how we navigate professional spaces are all shaped by cultural values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You\u2019re Not Either\/Or\u2014You\u2019re Both\/And<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Being fully Caribbean and fully American\/Canadian\/British at the same time is not a contradiction\u2014it\u2019s our strength.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stay-connected\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this episode, I dive into each component of the model with personal stories\u2014from moving to the U.S. as a teenager, to navigating work culture, to reflecting on how music, food, and language keep us grounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I created this model not just to help me understand myself\u2014but to help us&nbsp;<strong>understand each other better<\/strong>. My hope is that it gives you language to articulate your experience, connect across generations, and build cultural confidence\u2014wherever you are in the diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which part of the model resonates with you the most?<\/strong><br>What would you add?
