Blending biblical stories, research, and personal testimony, the book equips readers to process pain, build resilience and character, and live with joy and peace regardless of others\u2019 acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How I Got Here<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember pre-ordering the audiobook of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/14127\/9780310368274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Gift of Rejection<\/a>\u00a0in mid-September 2024. I finished\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carryonfriends.com\/read-carry-on-killing-comparison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Killing Comparison<\/a>,\u00a0by Nona Jones; a book that left a mark on me during the summer of 2024.  When the audiobook dropped in October 2024, I listened right away. And while I liked it, maybe even appreciated it &#8211; it didn\u2019t land as deeply as\u00a0<em>Killing Comparison<\/em>\u00a0had\u2026 at least not at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But funny how life brings things full circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to nearly a year later, and I found myself navigating a really tough moment at work: two back-to-back rejections. One for an internal role I had my heart set on, and another for a professional development opportunity I was genuinely excited about. Not even having champions at higher levels in the company helped me get this opportunity. I was frustrated. Hurt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, right when I needed it, The Gift of Rejection\u00a0floated back into my mind. I even shared it in my newsletter (and if you\u2019re not subscribed yet, you can join <a href=\"https:\/\/carryonfriends.kit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">here<\/a>).  In my newsletter I shared the experience telling my audience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;After spending the day being very disappointed, I remembered something from Nona Jones\u2019s book &#8220;The Gift of Rejection&#8221;&#8230;\u00a0In the book, Nona challenged readers to not wait for hindsight to say \u201cGod was protecting me.\u201d We should see the rejection as a gift \u2014 right now.\u00a0So I\u2019m calling this rejection a gift. I haven\u2019t unwrapped it yet to see what\u2019s inside \u2014 but I trust there\u2019s something good on the other side of this closed door.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing forced me to return to the book with new eyes and a different heart posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why I Came Back to This Book<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I realized I never wrote a proper review last year. I had promised my newsletter readers I would, but I felt like I hadn\u2019t connected deeply enough the first time. So this time, I hit replay. I relistened to the audiobook now with fresh perspective, real-time experience, and a bruised-but-open heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right from the first minute, it hit differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The author\u2019s honesty about working hard, doing \u201ceverything right,\u201d and still being met with rejection? It was like she was speaking\u00a0for\u00a0me. And this time, I\u00a0heard\u00a0the message. Loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn God\u2019s hands, rejection is often protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That line. That truth. It stopped me in my tracks. And then there was another gem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNona, I promised to work all things together for your good. I didn\u2019t promise that it would feel good. I promised that it would be good. In my hands, rejection is a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Listening  &amp; Reading Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this re-read, I did something I often do with nonfiction books I want to internalize: I listened to the audiobook\u00a0and read the Kindle version at the same time. I annotate a lot, and trying to mark up audio inside the app has never quite worked for me. This dual approach helps me pause, reflect, and highlight the lines that hit hardest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, the audiobook is narrated by the author herself and Nona delivers a\u00a0really\u00a0strong performance. I\u2019ve found that when authors read their own work, the delivery tends to land better. They know where the emotion is, where the pause belongs, how to pace the story. Nona does all of that. It made the experience feel even more personal and powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Review: Rejection is a Mirror\u2014Not a Verdict<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like\u00a0Killing Comparison,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/14127\/9780310368274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Gift of Rejection<\/a>\u00a0blends personal storytelling with biblical insight. Nona Jones isn\u2019t just theorizing, she\u2019s lived this stuff. And she doesn\u2019t just tell you that rejection has purpose; she shows you how. Using well-known biblical figures like David and Joseph, she walks us through how rejection often looks like loss but works like divine redirection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nona explores how rejection doesn\u2019t just hurt, it\u00a0shapes\u00a0us. It often goes internal and starts to influence our behavior in subtle ways.
